As summer drifts away, it’s time to prep your home for the cooler temperatures and volatile PNW weather in the months to come!

1. Clean the fireplace and chimney.
Remove ashes and charred wood from the fireplace. Verify the chimney cap on the top of your chimney is secure so no critters climb in and make your house their home! You really don’t want critters climbing down and making yourhome icon house their home. It would be smart to get your chimney checked out by a professional chimney cleaner to remove soot and creosote. Have the professional look at the damper to make sure it can be tightly closed to avoid drafts.

2. Check the heating system.
Make sure vents are not blocked/covered by furniture, carpeting, curtains, etc. Clean/replace all filters. Get an HVAC inspection — Your furnace needs to be in good shape!

3. Clean out the gutters.
Dispose of leaves and other debris from your gutters and drainpipes to avoid any clogging for when the showers begin.

4.  Ready the water heater.
Prepare for cooler weather by draining the water heater and clearing out any debris that has settled in the tank.

5. Get rid of possible drafts.
Caulk around your windows and check, fix, or install weather stripping on doors. Stay warm, save energy, and reduce your heating bills!
